So much has happened and many people keep up with my Crochet business on Facebook. But thought I'd post a new article on my blog as well.
First - as of March 2013, I have a new studio at Arts on Main in Gastonia, NC. My sweater business and Weasley Sleeves have taken off again, making it competitive for my custom order list for my Journey Inspired Scarves. Almost completely finished with my second custom order list and started the third and last one today. I'm so glad and feel very privileged that Journey fans the world over really like my scarves. But the lists were taking over my life and well, I can't sit and crochet all day every day. So, the Journey Inspired Scarves will be sold only in Pre-Announced Sales from now on. My next Sale will be September 29, 2013 at 3:00PM Eastern Standard Time on Etsy. My sweaters, sleeves and other projects still will be by custom order. Everything will have a wait but I promise the finished item will be of the highest quality.

Second, Arts on Main is a wonderful place - full of local art made by some of the most talented, considerate people I know. They have been wonderful to me and to my family. Last year during my son-in-law's illness, everyone was understanding when I had to be out of town for almost two months. Now that my daughter and grand-children are beginning their adjustments to life without John, I'm home more. Although I have strong feeling once school starts back and Becca truely begins her consulting business, I'll be in Concord more again. At least crochet is a portable business.

And last, my other business is Prevent Child Abuse Gaston. While my responsibilities there will remain part-time, the commitments are increasing. With the new projects we are planning, I will be in that office more and more.

Just for interest, here's some photos of my new studio.

In 2012, a young man asked me to replicate the scarf in the videogame, Journey. Little did I know what a journey he was about to start for me. On June 29, 2012, Game Informer Magazine published a link and story to my etsy shop, http://gotchacoveredbydzs.etsy.com, and my life changed. I copyrighted the crochet pattern and started a custom order list, that turned into a Notification List, another Custom Order List, a second Notification List and on February 23, 2013 we will hold our first outright sale of these scarves. Yes, they look like simple double crochet scarves, but the trick is in switching the colors. My son warned me about the popularity and the unique combination of crochet and the gaming world. I like promoting this particular game - it's peaceful and beautiful. The music is gorgeous. One of my customers is a violinist who just finished a video of the music wearing one of my scarves. Now, isn't that something!? Looking forward to the sale and can't believe my good fortune. All the folks I've "met" through this have been so nice and appreciative (and patient - these scarves are handmade and they take time!). So thanks to all who have been interested in my Journey Inspired Scarves. Just wait till you see what we have planned!

Add to that a thriving online business, preparing for business changes at the Non-Profit I work for and getting my son ready for college........I couldn't drive for three week until 2 days before we came home from vacation. Not the way I want to spend my vacation but there were so many blessings in the midst of all that - I have a wonderful family and my grand-daughters are worth more than their weight in gold. Their smiles, giggles, laughs and kisses made us all so much happier. Now that we are home, getting back into our regular routine, again life throws some more at us. But we are together and we will get through all this. And, hopefully, this time next year we can look back and be grateful for each other and the strength God gives us.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-11361482401876971302012-07-05T07:49:00.001-07:002012-07-05T07:49:29.531-07:00Yesterday, 4th of July, 2012Ever have one of those days you know you're going to look back on and remember. Yesterday was one of those days - my husband and I took our soon to be college bound son and one of his friends to the NC Mountains. We started with lunch at Louise's Rock House Restaurant in Linville Falls, NC. The food there is always good - we know Louise and all her daughters. Her oldest daughter, Shirley, owns the place now. Just as we got there the bottom fell out of the sky. We sat and ate lunch while the world outside cooled off and had a good long drink. From there we went to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Linville Falls Visitors Center, hiked down to the Upper and Lower Falls. While Louis, Al and Cynthia hiked up to another overlook, I walked back to the parking lot and met a couple from Vail, NC. She was walking with a cane and he was walking very patiently beside her. They are 78 years old and still hiking the NC mountains. Made me think, "That's how I want to be 22 years from now." They told me about hiking up to Table Rock with 5 of their grand-children about 5 years ago. (That's a short but strenuous hike - Moderate Rating) They have 30 in their family now with all their children, grands and great-grands, almost too many to house together on vacation but it sounded like they all get together and still have fun. We shared stories about our grand-children and I'm pretty sure all three of us were grinning pretty big when we came out of those woods. Met up with my guys and we headed to Wiseman's View. (Cynthia had never been to this part of the NC Mountain so we were giving her a mini-tour of some of our favorite places.) Wiseman's as always, did not disappoint. View was clear, humidity was starting to climb again since the rain, which we could see in the distance over Morganton. Just enough of a breeze - I stood still at the bottom of the stairs and couldn't help but think of the cold night we came up there last Fall and watched the Milky Way and more stars than you can imagine. Showed Cynthia the top of Table Rock from there and said, "That's where you're going to be tonight." Her eyes about fell out of her head.

After the walk back out, we drove up to Table Rock while the heavens opened up again. It started to hail HARD just as we came through Gingercake Acres into the trees at the beginning of the dirt road. We waited in the car for a few minutes for the rain to stop, got out and stepped into a luscious, green fresh fragrant world with a few drips from the trees above. I started a charcoal fire in a grill that was still HOT from someone else's lunch (DON'T EVER go off and leave HOT coals in a grill, especially in a National or State Park. Have you seen the damage in Colorado and Utah in the last few weeks???). Tried to start a camp fire as well, but everything was too wet. While I waited for the coals to get red hot, Louis, Al and Cynthia hiked out beyond the chimneys on the other side of the parking lot from Table Rock. Cynthia came back and said she got some great panoramic shots of Linville Gorge and towards the setting sun in the western sky. I forgot plates, of all things, so we used tin foil and ate kosher hot dogs, my homemade potatoe salad and had s'mores as dessert (that's why I was trying to build a camp fire but the charcoal did just fine).

At 8:00, they set off for the summit of Table Rock, one of my favorite places on this Earth! I couldn't go because the last time we were up there, about three weeks ago, I smashed my big toe and still can't wear anything but sandals. So, I waited in the car, crocheting until after 10:00PM. There was enough light from an almost full moon that I didn't need any artificial light. Then I lay back in the seat and watched the stars starting to twinkle between the leaves of the trees above me. Yes, people came and went and I DON'T recommend waiting in a car in a parking lot alone at night anywhere, but I felt very much at peace. There were people camping just beyond the picnic grounds and I knew if anyone bothered me I could make enough noise to get their attention. And, I had the car keys -I'm not beyond moving the car and getting out of there if someone starts something. But everything was quiet and I found myself going over things in my mind that I hadn't thought about for a while. At 10:45PM my guys showed up - the light from the moon was so bright it was like light pollution, but it was beautiful. On their way back down the mountain they helped two other groups of people who had ventured up there without flashlights. I've come down that trail before during a full moon with no flashlights (not recommended), slow going and we had to be careful especially since we had two small children in our group. But it was fun. Everyone piled back into the car, Cynthia went out like a light, and we talked on the way home, watching that bright moon accompany us all the way. A good day, a wonderful 4th of July celebrating some of this country's rich wonders. I love living in North Carolina.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-91874242833296191472012-06-29T20:21:00.001-07:002012-06-29T20:21:07.524-07:00Game Informer Magazine link to my Journey Scarfhttp://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/06/29/this-15-39-journey-scarf-is-amazing-you-definitely-want-it.aspx

A young man asked me to make him a Journey Video Game Scarf - I looked up the game, learned as much as I could about the scarves, came up with an original design and sold him the scarf. Then I listed the scarf as a custom order - they take a little over a week to make. Today, June 29, 2012, Game Informer Magazine found my listing and posted a link to it. Holy Cow! My hits are out the roof. Anyone who convos me and mentions Game Informer Magazine will get a 10% discount off the price. I will convo them a special coupon code to be used at the time of their order. Thanks so much Game Informer Magazine!!!
I left Child Protective Services a year ago in April to babysit grandchildren and make a committed effort to work on Child Abuse Prevention here in Gaston County. There are days when I do a real juggling act - between the girls, my family, Prevent Child Abuse Gaston, Arts on Main (Gaston County Art Guild) and my online business, I am VERY busy. Choices and priorities, then dealing with day to day crises as well as people who want to tell me what to do - some days I just want to move to the NC mountains and hide! But today, today was good - meeting with Project Committee with Prevent Child Abuse Gaston, volunteering to help build a play ground with the local YMCA, Kaboom, ESPN and Disney, meeting with a young woman writing a book about her great grandmother and the struggles during the Loray Mill Strike back in 1929, and then spending some good quiet time with my son who is about to go off to college. Very busy day. Tomorrow I must contact some folks about designing a website for Prevent Child Abuse Gaston, do some laundry, clean at least one room in this old house and then spend the afternoon at Arts on Main. Louis comes home and we get ready for the weekend. Don't EVER let it be said that retirement is boring. It can be whatever you want it to be. Oh and somewhere in there, I'll get some crocheting done.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-44002692158784010542012-04-29T20:02:00.000-07:002012-04-29T20:02:49.999-07:00Feeling My AgeThis past month has been very busy and very difficult for me. Starting on March 26, 2012, I had a kidney stone attack and ended up in the hospital. First ride in an ambulance - that was an experience I don't want to repeat, but the EMTs were fabulous. Then two weeks later another attack two days in a row that made me extremely sick and I landed back in the hospital for pain management and surgery. When my urologist went in to get the stone, it disappeared so they ended up doing an exploratory all through my kidney. Had a stint for two weeks and when my doc took it out we discovered I had a raging infection. So now we're battling that. Through it all I've had tremendous support from my family and friends; I still was able to plan and host the 1st Child Abuse Prevention Month Candlelight Vigil here in Gastonia and attend the Presentation of the Proclamation from the City Council (the one by the County Commissioners was the night of my surgery so a Board Member of the Prevent Child Abuse Gaston stood in for me). I attended our other functions this month as well, just moving kinda slow. And, my progress on my custom order list really took a toll, but I'm getting caught up. I'm not complaining, just stating that when you really want to do something, despite whatever obstacles may get in your way, you can do it. And, I had the help of a very attentive family - for that I am forever grateful. Don't ever take being pain free for granted because it can change in a heartbeat. And thank God for every day you are healthy.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-66918138180346999862012-02-20T20:03:00.000-08:002012-02-20T20:15:44.963-08:00Selling my Molly Weasley Sleeve Pattern

I get asked all the time to sell my Molly Weasley sleeve pattern. The one I use now is my own design and there are several good reasons I don't sell it.

1) It changes every time I make a pair of sleeves.

2) I have no desire to write it down - it's in my head.

3) This is how I make my extra money now.

I'm a retired Child Protective Services Supervisor. I worked in that field for over 25 years and now I'm the Executive Director for a Child Abuse Prevention Agency on a voluntary basis until we get our funding set up.

My crochet is my art and maybe someday I'll consider writing down the pattern and selling it. But right now, that does not fit in my plans. My crochet continues to be a great source of release and therapy for me. And, this past year it has been very lucrative for me. So when that day comes, I'll announce it and then put it out but not now.
Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-55453727976542915962012-01-10T19:43:00.000-08:002012-01-10T19:51:43.808-08:00New DesignsBeen a while since I posted anything here so thought I would talk a bit about my new designs. 1st - my new sleeve design is much more intricate, stitches are smaller, tighter design, more complex. Some stitches are overlaid and considered the most difficult crochet. Counts must be perfect to keep the correct pattern and all ends must be tucked in a way that you cannot tell where one strand ends and another begins. No Knots! There are also two hallmark stitches in each CCDZS crocheted piece. One is a sideways shell stitch, the other is a "window" effect.

The bodice is about to change as well. I'll leave the description for the pictures that will be posted on my facebook page in about another two weeks. It's going to be gorgeous!Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-30920281866299018572011-08-16T17:02:00.000-07:002011-08-16T17:07:35.320-07:00Waiting ListFinally through my waiting list for custom sweaters so I'm putting together some ready made sweaters for my etsy shop and for three shops in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Sales have come to a crawl which makes me concerned for my economy. But everyone needs sweaters and coats to keep themselves warm in the colder months. So as we head out of this incredibly hot summer, I hope folks will look for unusual sweater coats - they're much more versatile than a regular coat, plus stylish and quite a character statement. I love making these sweaters - putting the different textured yarns and colors together is like painting with fiber. So, here's to Fall coming in, the weather getting cooler and the sale of my unusual, fabulous, technicolor sweater dream coats.

See Enlightened Platypus on Facebook. We started convoing on etsy back in January to Dream up a new elf couture Sweater Dream Coat design. She makes her fabulous coats - I add my colorful bell sleeves. The first one will be listed soon in her shop. She previews all her coats on Facebook the week before her sales, so keep a watch for them. They are unbelievable! I have four more sweaters and pallets I'm working on now. Should be sending these back to her for Lisa to work her magic sometime next week. In the meantime too, I'm working on all the custom orders I recieved in my shop after her announcement. Lisa is awesome and a wonderful artisan to share her success in such a generous way. I am truely indebted to her. So, watch for more wonderful designs from both of us. We are blessed to be able to do something we truely love to do - Take care of our babies (my grandbabies in my case) and use our creativity to bring such joy!

Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-35918545627587010012011-04-03T19:25:00.000-07:002011-04-03T19:29:51.326-07:00My Husband's Classic Comfort20 some odd years ago, when we were dating, I taught this very masculine man how to crochet. And, boy did he ever pick it up. He makes absolutely gorgeous afghans. Now he has his own etsy shop at classiccomfort.etsy.com. So if you ever see a mid 50ish man, with a grey beard, balding head and a good sense of humor sitting on an airplane crocheting, I'll betcha it's him. He takes his crocheting everywhere. Now that's a man who is very secure in his masculinity and quite an artisan to boot. Getting prepared for leaving my day job - getting ready for a new grand daughter and preparing myself for working part time as a Prevention Specialist for our local Child Abuse Prevention Council. I am so excited - such changes give me great inspiration. I am looking forward to being creative and using my talents without any more restraint than what I choose myself. Wow, what a concept - being my own boss. And then there is traveling some with my husband......Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-13742318052963512762010-07-04T10:17:00.000-07:002010-12-26T19:16:21.010-08:00Jane's Curtains

My neighbor has a gorgeous 11,000 square foot home. She just had her kitchen remodeled with dark brown granite countertops w/chips of rainbow colored mica embedded in the granite. The backsplash between the countertops and the bottom of the naturally finished cherry wood cabinets is all cut natural stone with some diamond shaped bronze medallion accents. She asked me to make her some crocheted cafe curtains and valance for the one window above her sink. We went through several designs and settled on this one from a Magic crochet magazine, published about 30 years ago. I've modified it a bit and they are obviously still in the works. I'll block them when I'm done and post more pics. Check out my Facebook page with more pics of the design: Crochet Creations by Dottie Z. Wow, what a relief and excitement. My daughter and grand-daughter, I think, are the most excited because I'll get to spend more time with them. Figuring out 401k amounts, retirement pensions, etc. has been interesting too. And now, I'm finally setting up "my studio" upstairs in this old house. Going through some old yarns is like finding old friends - hmmmm, I wonder what I had in mind when I bought this one eons ago. Coming up with new projects. I hope to be working on the Darkness to Light Initiative with the Interagency Child Abuse Prevention Council here i n Gaston County, working some kind of part-time job, and of course, crocheting. More grand children I'm sure will fill out my days. But what dreams we have when faced with life changing events and choices. The job I have now was a dream way back when. Now, I'm looking at what might still be ahead at 55. My body may feel old at times, but I don't and there's still a lot of steam left here. So, on to that studio, as I clean out cabinets and shelves and replace the old with the new (or reaquainted) and get everything organized. Maybe I'll even have space to show my precious grand-daughter how to do all these handcrafts too. That will be fun.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-39391685167874496892009-10-08T20:26:00.000-07:002009-10-08T20:36:11.906-07:00Rainy Days and CrochetingJust some thoughts about rainy days and having time to sit and just crochet - I get lost in it. I'm always fascinated watching how different types of yarn look when twisted into different stitches. Just lately I've been working on "Mrs. Weasley" Sweaters, styled after a sweater worn by the character, Mrs. Weasley in the second Harry Potter movie, The Chamber of Secrets. The sleeves in the sweater are made from a conglomeration of colors and stitches. Well, suffice it to say, I've sold two already and am making more. Anyone who loves crochet will love these sweaters and they're fun to make. Watching the stitches flow, the colors and textures come together is like painting a picture, or molding a sculpture - it "feels" right. So on these rainy weekends, you'll find me in my room at home, peaceful with a cup of hot tea, crocheting one of these sweaters, happy with just me and my hook and yarns.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-14913691295157026502009-05-28T18:39:00.001-07:002009-05-28T18:52:27.036-07:00Crocheted Blinds for Windows

Back in 1992, I decided to make a blind for our front door. It had four double sided panes of glass so I designed a blind to fit the door. The house we lived in then was built in 1907, neat little two story house with dormer windows, front porch complete with an oak porch swing, just outside Cincinnati, Ohio. When we moved back to North Carolina a couple years later, I took down the blind and brought it with us. (I left some crocheted curtains in the bathroom I wish now I had brought with us as well). I crocheted a Tree of Life Blind for a front window in the house we live in now and re-formatted the blind from the old house for another window.

These took me months to make and I'm fast. I get ideas in my head of how I'm going to use the yarn, the textures, the colors, the feel of the yarn next to my skin - it's intoxicating. Now I have about three rooms upstairs full of yarns, some of which I've had for over twenty years. Well, my daughter has blessed me with a gorgeous grand-daughter and we need room for little ones to play. So - I'm destashing. I never dreamed it would be so hard to let go of some of my yarns, but I'll be posting them in my etsy shop ( http://ccdzs.etsy.com/ ) in the next few days. Just posted two that are just beautiful and I've definitely priced them to sell. So someone else, put on your dreaming caps and think of how you want to use these yarns.

Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-34193357045187465522008-12-14T11:03:00.000-08:002008-12-14T11:08:09.220-08:001st December Challenge

1st December Challenge Finished and Posted

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=18681691

It was fun to make and work with such talented artisans such as Feistywomandesigns ( see her blog at http://feistywomandesigns.blogspot.com/ to see how the yarn was made) and WhirlygigYarns. But in light of the recent story about the young man who escaped from his abusers in California, I feel compelled to write something here. I have been a Child Protective Services Supervisor with my local DSS since July 1998, that's 11 1/2 years. Before that I was a CPS Investigator since 1989, with a 2 1/2 year stint in Ohio as a Case Supervisor with a children's mental health agency. Especially in this time of the holidays, look around you and notice the children in your life, in the stores as you walk through, in the malls, on the sidewalks, when you drop your kids off at school, in your neighborhoods, and where ever you go. Then just take a moment, just a moment to smile at one of them. Just a kid you don't know but who looks a little down or maybe he/she needs someone to show they care, if only for just that moment. I don't know how many times I went out on a report and just because I took extra time to sit down with a child and really listen, stories unfolded that led to real life changing events for them and for me. Every time I came home late at night from making sure someone else's kids were safe, the first thing I did was walk into my children's rooms and made sure their blankets were pulled up, they were peaceful and warm and safe. I was lucky to have a husband who could do this for me when I was trying to do it for others. Sometimes all a child needs is someone to smile to show that somewhere someone cares.

My heart goes out to that young man. And, I pray every night for the ones we will never know anything about. So kiss your kids tonight and tell them you love them. That's not just words - it should be a way of life.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-32547043720777662902008-12-02T15:37:00.000-08:002008-12-02T15:43:50.535-08:001000Markets.comOK - I did it. I added a 1000 Markets shop last night. Sat up working on it until 2 in the morning. If anyone is following my blog, check it out at 1000markets.com/ccdzs. I'm excited about a new venue and hope that it brings some more biz. Dreamwoven from Etsy has started a new market there called Wearable Art. That looks very interesting and a wonderful way to "market" handmade items. Makes me wish I was more in a situation where I could quit my day job and just work with yarns. But alas, the finances just aren't there yet. Making myself venture out more into this internet marketing is really stretching my internet knowledge. Also, just started uploading my etsy shop on to Google Base. Still having a problem with the automatic upload so I'm doing it manually every morning. OK, let's see how this goes.Crochet Creations by Dottie Scherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14487646387644970067noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6411189859735741916.post-56129555525388820882008-11-09T08:45:00.000-08:002008-11-09T08:48:45.460-08:00EtsyFAST December ChallengeI'm a member of the EtsyFAST group (Etsy Fiber Artists Street Team).
